what is SWIFT?

Stormwater Installer Fundamentals Training (SWIFT) is a two‑day, hands‑on training program designed for highway construction professionals working in erosion, sediment, and stormwater control. Developed by Auburn University’s Stormwater Research Facility (AU‑SRF) in partnership with the Alabama Construction Workforce Alliance (ACWA), SWIFT builds real‑world skills that improve jobsite performance, compliance, and environmental protection.

- Highway Construction laborers & Installers

- Inspectors & Maintenace Personel

- New Eorkforce recruits entering highway construction

wHAT YOU'LL LEARN

Through classroom instruction and extensive hands‑on field training, participants learn:

  • Proper installation of erosion, sediment, and stormwater controls
  • How to recognize common installation failures and deficiencies
  • Fundamentals of stormwater compliance and environmental responsibilities
  • Best practices used on DOT highway construction projects

Training covers practices such as:

  • Silt fence and sediment barriers
  • Inlet protection and sediment basins
  • Ditch checks, slope drains, and diversion swales
  • Mulching, erosion control blankets, and turf reinforcement

Training Format & Certification

Training Format: 

2‑day course (12 hours total)

  • 4 hours classroom instruction
  • 8 hours hands‑on field training
  • Held at Auburn University’s 10‑acre Stormwater Research Facility
  • Small groups for focused, practical learning
  • Certification exam included

Participants who pass the exam receive a SWIFT Certification, demonstrating knowledge in highway construction stormwater fundamentals.
